This concept was for the Scorpio level of Project Zodiac.
This piece allowed me to experiment with combining digital 2D and 3D workflows. During a critique, someone described the aesthetic as, “kinda like Minecraft, but different.”
The biggest challenge was designing an environment with a consistent shape language throughout the composition and its elements.
My process:
1) Sketchbook thumbnails
2) Color/mood sketch (Photoshop)
3) Base model build and lighting (Maya)
4) Final paint-over (Photoshop)
The lighting and color palette are meant to evoke Scorpio’s brooding and mysterious nature while still maintaining the playful feel of a retro platformer.
